Weather not only impacted the final round of the 2025 Players Championship, it forced a necessary playoff to move into Monday as Rory McIlroy and J.J. Spaun will go head-to-head with an aggregate score across three holes determining who will take home the $4.5 million grand prize. TPC Sawgrass overnight will ready itself for a fifth day of play after McIlroy and Spaun took divergent paths toward finishing at 12 under through 72 holes.
Spaun led after three rounds with McIlroy sitting four shots back entering Sunday. The Ulsterman soared up the leaderboard to stand in front by three strokes on the back nine; however, a bogey on the 14th and four straight pars to end his round kept his score stagnant. Meanwhile, Spaun finished with birdies on two of his final five holes after scoring three bogeys across his first 11.
Will McIlroy improve on his 3-2 record in playoffs, or will Spaun take down the multi-time major champion in his first go at extra holes?
