Blue Jays vs. Red Sox prediction: Odds, recent stats, trends, and best bets for June 18

The Blue Jays (36-38) take the field at Fenway Park today looking to sweep the Red Sox (29-42) and continue their push in the American League East and Wild Card playoff pictures.

Toronto shut out Boston last night, 3-0. Seven pitchers combined to blank the Sox. Simeon Woods Richardson earned the win and Louis Varland struck out the side in the ninth for the save. The Blue Jays broke through in the third inning when Andrés Giménez delivered an RBI single and later scored on a Vladimir Guerrero Jr. RBI groundout, giving Toronto a 2–0 lead. Guerrero added insurance in the eighth with an RBI single, finishing with two RBIs, while Giménez chipped in two hits, a run scored, and three stolen bases. Boston’s offense was the story—for the wrong reasons—going 0-for-12 with runners in scoring position and stranding 13 baserunners. Their inability to hit in the clutch this season is a big reason why they sit last in the division.

Toronto has outscored the Sox 9-1 through the first two games of the series. They are 6-4 in their last ten games and sit third in the AL East (ten games behind the Yankees) and also tied for the third and final Wild Card spot. Boston is now 12-24 on the season at home (worst record in baseball) and 15.5 games back in the division. Its quickly looking like a lost season for the Red Sox

Thursday’s matchup features a solid pitching duel on paper:

  • Blue Jays: Trey Yesavage (RHP)
    • Record: 3–3
    • ERA: 3.78
Yesavage has struggled in his last two starts (at home vs. the Orioles and the Yankees) allowing 11 earned runs in just 10.2 innings.
  • Red Sox: Sonny Gray (RHP)
    • Record: 8–1
    • ERA: 3.03
Gray has been one of Boston’s very few bright spots, allowing less than three runs in six of his last eight starts.

This game boils down to Boston needing to hit situationally vs. Yesavage needing to simply pitch better. That matchup more than likely determines the outcome of this game because Gray will be solid on the mound and not offer much to the Jays’ lineup.
