49ers exec Paraag Marathe is a finalist for MLS Commissioner

Long-time 49ers executive Paraag Marathe, a key figure in the sustained success of the franchise, could be leaving.

John Ourand of Puck reports that Marathe is one of three finalists for the position of MLS Commissioner.

The others are LAFC co-owner Larry Berg and media, sports, and gaming executive David Nathanson.

Marathe served as the 49ers’ executive V.P. of football operations. He’s also the president of 49ers Enterprises and the chairman of Leeds United.

From his online bio at the team’s website: “Marathe has played an integral role in building and maintaining the 49ers current roster, most recently negotiating contract extensions with core players QB Brock Purdy, TE George Kittle, LB Fred Warner, and FB Kyle Juszczyk. He has also helped bring several standout players to the franchise via trades, including RB Christian McCaffrey and T Trent Williams. Over the years,
Marathe has consistently kept the club in a competitive salary cap position.”

Ourand adds that the MLS is expected to announce its new Commissioner next month.

UPDATE 8:36 p.m. ET: So much for that. Marathe has withdrawn his name from consideration, via Eben Novy-Williams of Sportico.
