Deion Sanders on subpoena: “When you’re ‘him,’ you get sued”

Colorado coach Deion Sanders is under subpoena to testify at a trial involving his son, Shilo. The case starts on Monday, August 31 — five days before Colorado’s first game of the 2026 season.

Deion disputes the notion that the situation will be a distraction.

Do you think that’s my first subpoena?” Sanders told reporters on Monday, via the Associated Press. “When you have ‘it,’ when you’re ‘him,’ you get sued. You have off-the-field foolishness that if someone really sat down and explained it to you, you would say, ‘You’ve got to be kidding.’ But it is what it is.

“I don’t know anyone that’s a game-changer, a way-maker, that is not dealing with some type of lawsuit.”

He’s right, on one level. People with money become targets for litigation. But, at another level, he’s wrong; successful persons who don’t dance on the line of potential liability don’t get sued — unless the claim is truly frivolous.

Of course, Deion isn’t a defendant in the case for which he has been subpoenaed to testify. He is, however, facing a separate lawsuit regarding the development of his “Prime” logo.
