The win guaranteed the Yankees will enjoy their 34th straight winning season. In the moment, it also kept the Yankees within four games of the first place Rays in the AL East and ten games clear in the race for a Wild Card spot in the postseason.
Tuesday’s opener was actually a tightly contested game for seven innings before New York broke through late. The Yankees grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Cody Bellinger scored following a defensive miscue by Colorado. The Rockies answered in the third inning when Adael Amador launched a solo home run to center field, tying the game at 1-1. New York regained the lead in the fifth. Facing his former team, Ryan McMahon delivered a go-ahead RBI double that scored George Lombard Jr. and put the Yankees ahead 2-1. The game remained close until the eighth inning when reserve outfielder Heliot Ramos, who had entered after Aaron Judge exited as planned in his return from the injured list, crushed a three-run homer to center field that proved necessary because Colorado made things interesting in the ninth. Hunter Goodman launched a two-run homer for the Rockies in the ninth to cut the deficit to 5-3, but Yankees closer David Bednar recorded the final out for his 32nd save.
Tomoyuki Sugano (12-8, 5.19 ERA) gets the start for the Rockies today. The veteran right-hander has managed 12 wins, but his best has been no better than OK and he has rarely been at his best. His ERA is 8.25 ERA over his last five starts. He has produced only two quality starts during that stretch and has allowed 1.85 home runs per nine innings this season. Will Warren (9-6, 4.16 ERA) is expected to take the mound for the Yankees. Unlike Sugano, Warren has been solid all season. The righthander has quietly been a dependable member of the Yankees’ rotation. Averaging nearly nine strikeouts per nine innings, he owns a solid 4.03 ERA over his last five starts.
