Reigning champions Real Madrid were handed a defeat by Lille on Wednesday, one of several surprise results to close out Matchday 2 of the UEFA Champions League.
Lille’s 1-0 win over the Spanish giants came courtesy of a penalty scored by Jonathan David in first-half stoppage time. It was the foundation for an attack-focused second half for Real Madrid, who switched on Kylian Mbappe to find an equalizer and took a flurry of shots at goal in the dying minutes of the game to no avail. The result snaps a 36 game unbeaten run in European play for Real Madrid, as well as an unbeaten run to start the season.
Elsewhere in Europe, Aston Villa’s super substitute Jhon Duran ensured they would come out of their first Champions League game at home in four decades with a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich, ending their run of 42 games unbeaten in the Champions League group stage or league phase. A 10-man Juventus also came from behind to beat RB Leipzig 3-2, marking a first statement win for new manager Thiago Motta, while Benfica manager Bruno Lage made a statement of his own with a 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid.
