There was little doubt the Yankees (75-57) would score runs against the beat up, tired pitching staff of the Astros (66-67). On Tuesday night they scored seven runs but fell a couple of runs short thanks to a rough night for their own staff. Last night, the pitching was solid, and the hit parade continued as New York evened this three-game series at one game apiece with a 9-3 win.
The Yankees broke open a close game with six runs in the seventh and eighth innings combined to roll to the win last night. Houston struck first in the opening inning when Jose Altuve doubled home Isaac Paredes, but the Yankees immediately answered. Ben Rice launched a solo homer, and New York added another run to grab an early 2-1 lead. The Astros tied the game in the fourth on a Daulton Varsho solo home run only to see the Yankees regain the lead in the bottom of the inning. Houston tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the seventh but the floodgates opened after the seventh inning stretch. Cody Bellinger delivered the biggest hit of the night, a bases-loaded double that scored two runs and gave the Yankees the lead for good. Spencer Jones and Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed with RBI hits as New York quickly ended all suspense. New York finished with 13 hits overall, compared to just four for the Astros. On the mound, Elmer Rodriguez gave the Yankees six solid innings, allowing three runs while striking out six. The bullpen took over from there, shutting Houston down over the final three innings. For the Astros, starter Peter Lambert pitched reasonably well through 5⅔ innings, but the bullpen collapsed during New York’s decisive rally.
With the win, the Yankees remained 3.5 games behind the Rays in the AL East but did extend their lead over the Red Sox to 2.5 games. The Astros wasted a golden opportunity to extend their lead in the AL West as the Mariners and the Rangers also lost yesterday.
Houston is expected to send right-hander Hayden Wesneski (3-1, 4.23 ERA) to the mound tonight. His most recent start was his best of the season. The righthander threw five shutout innings against the Athletics last Friday in a 4-0 win. The Yankees counter with former Astros’ hurler Gerrit Cole (7-6, 3.11 ERA). Cole was elite as well in his last start allowing just one run over six innings while striking out eight in Baltimore last Thursday. The Yankees have won four of the righthander’s last five starts.
