It appears Trey Lance has won the Chargers’ backup quarterback competition.
Tom Pelissero of Netflix reports that they are waiving DJ Uiagalelei on Sunday. He adds that the Chargers hope to bring him back to the practice squad, but another team could claim Uiagalelei and he could opt to head elsewhere if he is unclaimed.
Uiagalelei spent last season on the Chargers’ practice squad and head coach Jim Harbaugh said a little over a week ago that he was in a tight race with Lance to be the backup to Justin Herbert.
Uiagalelei completed 11 of 18 passes for 141 yards in the preseason finale while Lance did not complete a pass in his two series of work, but the Chargers are apparently sticking with the status quo in the No. 2 spot.
