Dae’Quan Wright is going back to school.
The former Browns tight end cleared waivers on Tuesday, via Adam Schefter of ESPN. Wright now has a clear path to return to college football. He plans to play for LSU.
If Wright had been claimed, he would have been unable to play college football. The standard NFL contract, which would have been absorbed by the team claiming it, prevents a player from playing football for anyone else.
The move raises future questions. What if an NFL team offers him a roster spot during the 2026 season, while he’s playing for LSU? Can he be signed after the 2026 LSU season ends? Will he have to re-enter the draft in 2027, or does he remain a free agent?
The questions are unprecedented, because the situation is. And if the NFL doesn’t already have rules to cover this situation, it needs to figure something out.
