Dan Campbell: We have a ton of confidence in Jahmyr Gibbs handling bigger workload

The Lions have employed a double-barreled rushing attack this season, but they won’t be able to give the ball to David Montgomery for the rest of the season.

Montgomery suffered a season-ending knee injury in the Week 15 loss to the Bills and losing a running back who has scored 25 touchdowns over the last two years is a significant blow. It would be even more significant if not for the presence of Jahmyr Gibbs in the backfield, however.

Gibbs has scored the same amount of touchdowns and he’s already reached the end zone more often than he did in his rookie season. He’s also picked up 1,442 yards from scrimmage, which makes it easy to understand why head coach Dan Campbell feels comfortable with Gibbs working as a solo act.

“We have a lot of confidence in Gibbs,” Campbell said, via the team’s website. “He’s continued to get better and better as the season has gone. Given the opportunity, he’s made a lot of plays. He made some big plays for us. He brings an explosive element. He’s getting better in the pass game, and you see what he’s able to do in the run game. We have a ton of confidence.”

Craig Reynolds and fourth-round pick Sione Vaki are also on the Lions roster, but it’s going be Gibbs’s show the rest of the way and the Lions will need him to keep performing at the same level.
