Giants vs. Red Sox prediction: Odds, recent stats, trends, and best bets on August 21

The Boston Red Sox (68-59) open a three-game series against the San Francisco Giants (52-75) tonight at Fenway Park. Boston enters the weekend in control of the second Wild Card position in the American League. The Giants are riding out a disappointing season. Only the Rockies have fewer wins on the campaign than San Francisco’s 52.

The issues for the Giants are on the mound as well as at the plate. The offense has scored the fewest runs in the National League while only the pitching staffs of the Nationals, Reds, and Pirates have allowed more runs. That’s a bad combination. In losing two of three to the Guardians in Cleveland earlier this week, San Francisco scored a total of four runs and allowed a whopping 14. The Red Sox have treaded water of late but did take two of three against the Diamondbacks earlier this week. Boston scored 26 runs over the three games and allowed 12 including seven in a loss in Wednesday’s series finale.

Fans at Fenway will be treated tonight as they get to witness a couple of aces on the mound. San Francisco hands the ball to Logan Webb (8-7, 3.50 ERA) while Sonny Gray (15-3, 2.65 ERA) takes the mound for Boston. Webb comes into tonight having allowed one run or fewer in each of his last three starts. However, there is some uncertainty after he reportedly exited his August 15 start with minor tightness following a comebacker. Gray has been one of the best pitchers in the American League this season. He has been particularly sharp lately, compiling a 2.72 ERA over his last seven starts. His ability to limit walks and miss bats has kept him on the perimeter of the AL Cy Young conversation.

No doubt former Red Sox star Rafael Devers will be a major storyline this weekend as he returns to Fenway Park wearing a Giants uniform after last year’s blockbuster trade.
