Jahmyr Gibbs: The contract process was extremely stressful

There was reason to believe that Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs was close to signing a contract extension on Thursday morning when he suited up for practice for the first time at training camp and those thoughts became a reality when news of an agreement broke later in the day.

Gibbs remained limited to individual work at Friday’s practice, but made it clear that even a limited workload was better than how it felt sitting on the side to watch his teammates go through the first week of camp without him.

“This process has been extremely stressful,” Gibbs said, via the team’s website. “I just wanted to play ball. I missed being out there with my teammates and my coaches and it’s just fun being out there now with my pads. It feels a lot better.”

The Lions will likely continue to ramp Gibbs up with caution to make sure that there’s no more missed time in the future because, as his three-year, $67.5 million deal makes clear, they have a lot riding on him.
