Michael Lombardi will follow Bill Belichick to UNC, as G.M. of the program

Bill Belichick is getting the gang back together again.

First up, Michael Lombardi. The NFL personnel executive turned media personality will join Belichick at North Carolina as the General Manager of the program. Most recently, Lombardi worked for VSiN.

He worked for multiple NFL teams from 1984 through 2007. After an initial media stint, he became G.M. of the Browns in 2013.

From 2014 through 2016, he was an assistant to the coaching staff in New England. He then returned to media work.

Unlike Belichick, Lombardi has college experience. He was the recruiting coordinator at UNLV from 1981 through 1984.

He’s the latest college football G.M. Recently, Stanford hired Andrew Luck in that role.

Lombardi did a podcast with Belichick this season. Last week, Lombardi explained that Belichick was serious about making the jump to college football, due in part to the fact that too many NFL teams are dysfunctional. “Where are the great jobs?” Lombardi said. He took an indirect shot at Jaguars chief football strategy officer Tony Khan, saying “there’s sons of owners that run the analytical department.”

Belichick could soon add other former lieutenants, including assistant coaches Matt Patricia, Joe Judge, and Josh McDaniels, to name a few.
