The Red Sox (76-65) and the Orioles (69-72) continue their four-game series tonight at Oriole Park at Camden Yards following last night’s series-opening 6-5 win by the Sox.
Neither of these teams is winning the AL East but each is in the hunt for a Wild Card spot which makes this series crucial…especially for the Orioles. Boston sits comfortably in the second Wild Card spot (5.5 game lead) but Baltimore trails Cleveland for the final Wild Card spot by 1.5 games. Every loss down the stretch is magnified for Baltimore.
The storyline of last night’s game Adley Rutschman going yard twice in his first game back at Camden Yards since being traded to Boston at the Trade Deadline. Ironically, Rutschman got a standing ovation as he came to bat for the first time. Doubtful those cheers continued as the backstop delivered a smack to his former team in the top of the first. The Orioles answered on a Pete Alonso sacrifice fly in the home half of the first and Baltimore actually took the lead in the fourth inning when newly-acquired Luis Robert Jr. and Pete Alonso went back-to-back to put the Orioles ahead 3-1. Baltimore appeared in control behind starter Brandon Young, but Boston chipped away. Rutschman’s second homer cut the deficit to 3-2 in the sixth, and an RBI single from Isiah Kiner-Falefa tied the game in the seventh. The decisive blow came in the eighth when Nick Sogard launched a two-run homer off Yennier Cano to break a 3-3 tie. Rookie star Roman Anthony added an insurance homer in the ninth, which proved important when Christian Encarnacion-Strand crushed a two-run homer off Aroldis Chapman in the bottom half. Chapman ultimately secured his 31st save as Boston escaped with the win.
Ranger Suárez (5-4, 3.64 ERA) takes the mound for Boston tonight. The southpaw will look to rebound from a dreadful outing in his last start. Last Sunday he was torched by the Yankees allowing six runs on nine hits over 5.1 innings. Shane Baz (5-14, 4.01 ERA) is expected to be on the bump for the Orioles. The righthander’s won-loss record is not appealing but the veteran has been solid the last few weeks. Over his last three starts, Baz has pitched 17.2 innings and allowed not allowed more than three runs in any of them. He faced the Red Sox on July 20and gave up four runs (one earned run) over six innings in a 6-5 loss.
