Sacramento State president says Mike Vick expressed interest, received interview

Mike Vick is a candidate for the Sacramento State head-coaching job. Unless he isn’t. Unless he is.

It’s all unclear at this point. What is clear is that it’s in the mutual interests of Vick and the school to publicize the flirtation. Even if it will never be anything more than that.

Adam Schefter of ESPN.com reported earlier today that Sacramento State Sacramento State “is in discussions to hire former Pro-Bowl QB Mike Vick as its new head coach, per sources.” Joe Davidson of the Sacramento Bee reported, citing an unnamed member of the Sacramento State athletic department, that this is false.

Since then, the school’s president has issued a statement — carrying the possible fingerprints of a P.R. firm — that Vick has been interviewed.

“He has expressed interest in the position and yes I did meet with him about his interest in Sac State football and our athletic rise,” Luke Wood said. “As you can imagine, given the success of our athletic programs that our football head coach job is an attractive role.”

That’s a far cry from being “in discussions to hire” Vick. It possibly was a courtesy interview that is now being used to generate interest in the job, especially as the school moves to FBS and supposedly has an NIL budget of $50 million.

Setting aside the past complications that might or might not complicate a background check, Vick has no noteworthy coaching experience. Deion Sanders, in contrast, spent time at an FCS program before being hired by an FBS school.

Meanwhile, Davidson has built some wiggle room into his reporting.

Maybe at some point Sacramento State will be “in discussions to hire” Vick. That’s apparently not the case, currently.
