Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel said on Sunday that he had “no idea” whether quarterback Tua Tagovailoa will be able to play in Week 18 and the answer wasn’t any clearer during his Monday press conference.
Tagovailoa missed Sunday’s win over the Browns with a hip injury that he initially suffered in Week 15 and then aggravated in Week 16. The injury did not improve as hoped heading into Sunday and McDaniel said the team did not feel it was safe putting Tagovailoa on the field as a result.
When asked on Monday why Week 18 would be a consideration given that feeling, he said “it’s all about time” in terms of Tagovailoa’s recovery. That leaves the team “firmly in the unknown” in terms of knowing his availability and it means they will be preparing Tyler Huntley to start against the Jets.
“Snoop will get more reps than Tua this week,” McDaniel said.
Given the way last week played out, the Dolphins may not get much more clarity on Tagovailoa’s availability before the weekend so planning on Huntley being the man may be the wisest call.
