Why was Valencia vs. Real Madrid postponed? Massive floods after storms in Spain causes match rescheduling

The match between Valencia and Real Madrid has been following massive flooding in Spain. Overall, more than 200 people died in the flooding which hit Valencia and surrounding areas while more rain is expected to be on the way adding to the chaos.

On Thursday, the Spanish Football Federation announced that all matches in the Valencia region would be postponed until a later date.

“Beyond the postponements, Spanish football has wanted to show its solidarity with those affected, especially with the relatives of those who have died in this natural disaster; and, for this reason, all the matches played yesterday in competitions organised by the RFEF were preceded by respectful minutes of silence,” RFEF said in a statement. “This circumstance will be repeated over the weekend.”

Real Madrid also donated €1 million to help with relief efforts from the flooding. Villarreal’s match versus Rayo Vallecano and Levante’s match against Malaga were also postponed. La Liga clubs also pledged to help raise funds for the Red Cross in support of relief efforts.

After disappointment in El Clasico, losing to Barcelona, Real Madrid will have extra time to prepare for their Champions League match against Milan on Tuesday. Valencia’s next match is an away match in the Copa del Rey against Parala Esucela on Wednesday while Real Madrid will be back in action in Spain on Nov. 9 hosting Osasuna.
