Ben Johnson: D’Andre Swift is already a vital part of Bears’ offense, and capable of more

Bears running back D’Andre Swift had a career-high 1,087 rushing yards and nine touchdowns last season, but coach Ben Johnson thinks Swift can do even more.

Swift played his first three NFL seasons for the Lions while Johnson was on Detroit’s coaching staff, and while the Lions decided to trade Swift away after drafting running back Jahmyr Gibbs, Johnson said he’s always believed Swift is an elite playmaker with the ball in his hands.

“He’s a dynamic player,” Johnson said, via the Bears’ website. “I’ve known that about him since he came into the league, firsthand up there in Detroit, and certainly last year I wasn’t surprised about the year he had. So, is he capable of more? Absolutely. He absolutely is. He’s a vital part of what we do here.”

As much as the Bears’ offense was celebrated last year for Johnson’s trick plays and Caleb Williams’ late-game heroics, Swift was one of the most effective running backs in the NFL in 2025. And Johnson expects more in 2026.
