The Philadelphia Phillies (57-52) travel down I-95 tonight for the opener of a three-game series tonight against the Baltimore Orioles (53-56) at Camden Yards. Philadelphia is scuffling a bit having lost three in a row and eight of their last ten to drop to seven games behind the Braves. Their hold on the final Wild Card spot is down to two games over San Diego. Meanwhile, the Orioles continue to linger just outside the playoff picture in the American League. Baltimore sits 2.5 games behind Cleveland for the final Wild Card spot.
The Phillies limped into this series after a disappointing three-game sweep at the hands of the Marlins. Leads were wasted late in two of the three games with Philly’s offense coming up empty in the other. Like their neighbors to the north, Baltimore was off yesterday. However, they arrive home with considerably more momentum after completing an incredible comeback victory over Detroit on Wednesday. The Orioles trailed 7-0 after six innings and appeared headed toward a lopsided loss against Tigers ace Tarik Skubal. Instead, Baltimore erupted for five runs in the seventh inning to spark a stunning 10-9 victory in 12 innings.
The O’s will hand the ball tonight to Brandon Young (8-2, 3.13 ERA). The Right-hander’s last two starts have been exceptional. He’s allowed single runs in wins over Atlanta and Houston. Young pitched into the seventh inning last Saturday against Atlanta and finished the seventh the start before in Houston. Don Mattingly and the Phillies are undecided as to who to start as of publication of this preview.
