Following a Trade Deadline acquisition of three-time batting champion Luis Arraez and reliever Brooks Raley, the Philadelphia Phillies (59-53) take the field at home tonight against the Washington Nationals (55-58). It’s the first of a four-game set between the NL East rivals. Philadelphia has been scuffling of late. They begin the week in second place in the NL East, eight games behind the Braves. They have slipped to the final Wild Card spot and hold just a one game lead over San Diego for that spot. Washington has flirted with a postseason spot but currently sits fourth in the division, 12½ games out of first and 4½ games behind the Phillies for that final Wild Card spot.
Washington comes to Philadelphia after being swept in a four-game series by division-leading Atlanta. Sunday’s finale was another frustrating offensive night for Washington as the Nats totaled just four hits in the game. Among the National League’s leaders in home runs and runs scored, the Nationals’ bats were shut down by the Braves’ hurlers. Philadelphia takes the field at Citizens’ Bank Park feeling considerably better after winning a road series in Baltimore. The most encouraging development for Philadelphia was its pitching. The Phillies held Baltimore scoreless in the final two games of the series and outscored the Orioles 13-0.
Washington is expected to start left-hander Andrew Alvarez (2-3, 4.06 ERA). The southpaw has been inconsistent at best of late allowing just one earned run over 4.1 innings last Monday against Toronto. That effort, though, was preceded by three starts in which Alvarez threw a total of just 12 innings during which time he allowed 11 runs. The Phillies counter with Aaron Nola (3-9, 5.61 ERA). The veteran’s last start was encouraging as he threw 5.2 innings at Miami allowing just five hits and a single earned run. In his four other starts this month, Nola has allowed 13 earned runs over 23.1 innings. Of particular note, Nola has served up a team-high 26 home runs this season.
