Anthony Richardson’s future with the Colts has been debated often since he requested a trade this offseason and assistant General Manager Ed Dodds gave a strong hint about how things are going to play out last week.
Dodds said that the Colts want to have three quarterbacks “that can play,” which suggests that both Richardson and Riley Leonard will make the cut as backups to Daniel Jones. After Saturday’s preseason game against the Falcons, Richardson weighed in on the prospect of remaining with the team into the regular season.
“I’m just looking forward to helping the team,” Richardson said, via the team’s website. “They truly believe that I have a chance to be on this squad and I love that. I just want to be able to contribute, put my best foot forward and help the team win.”
Leonard started Saturday’s game and went 7-of-14 for 62 yards while leading the Colts to a pair of field goals. Richardson, who started the first preseason game, was 3-of-9 for 24 yards while running three times for 15 yards and being sacked twice in the 34-6 loss. Neither performance made a compelling argument for the No. 2 job, so the competition will likely continue through the team’s final preseason game.
