The Toronto Blue Jays (53-60) continue their three-game series against the Houston Astros (58-56) tonight at Daikin Park after taking the opener last night and in the process snapping Houston’s six-game winning streak.
The Blue Jays spent the trade deadline buying and selling as they moved out players including Kevin Gausman (Cubs) and Jeff Hoffman (Twins) and brought in Jose Soriano (Angels). They also worked out a trade with their opponent tonight, the Astros sending them outfielder Dalton Varsho in exchange for pitcher Spencer Arrighetti. Houston was quieter than usual at the deadline. They made four deals but the Varsho/Arrighetti deal was their largest.
Toronto used timely hitting and a strong outing from Shane Bieber to take Monday’s opener, 3-1. The Blue Jays struck first in the second inning when Alejandro Kirk launched a solo home run to left-center field off Cristian Javier, giving Toronto a 1-0 lead. Kirk’s fourth homer of the season would stand as the game’s only extra-base hit by either team. Toronto expanded the lead in the fourth on a single from Jesús Sánchez and a sacrifice fly from Ernie Clement produced a sacrifice fly that scored Springer and pushed the lead to 3-0. Houston threatened repeatedly but struggled to deliver the big hit. The Astros collected 10 hits, compared to seven by Toronto, yet left 13 runners on base and failed to record an extra-base hit. Their lone run came in the sixth inning when Jeremy Peña singled home Yainer Díaz, to provide the final score. Bieber earned the win, allowing just one run on nine hits across 5⅔ innings with six strikeouts. Tyler Rogers pitched a scoreless ninth for his third save.
Toronto is scheduled to start right-hander Trey Yesavage (5-5, 3.73 ERA) tonight. The righthander was solid in his last start allowing just three hits and one run over 6.2 innings against the Nationals last Wednesday. His two starts prior to that were less appealing to Jays’ fans – 10 innings, 10 hits, 6 earned runs. Houston counters with right-hander Hayden Wesneski (1-0, 4.76 ERA). This is Wesneski’s second start since returning from Tommy John surgery. In his season debut last Wednesday, he lasted 5.2 innings allowing seven hits and three earned runs.
