The Guardians’ ace was elite striking out 13 and allowing just one unearned run over seven innings. Patrick Bailey, Angel Genao, and Angel Martinez each ripped two-run homers to provide the offense for Cleveland. With the win, the Guardians are now 11-4 since August 12.
Toronto sends its ace, Dylan Cease (9-5, 2.33 ERA) to the mound tonight. Among the Cy Young favorites in the American League, Cease has been lights out for the last two months. In just two of his last 11 starts Cease has allowed three earned runs and in five of those 11 he has not allowed a run (earned or otherwise). Cease has thrown 67 innings since July 1 and allowed just 11 earned runs while striking out 89. Cleveland counters with left-hander Joey Cantillo (9-7, 3.70 ERA). His latest outing came August 26 against the Angels, when he worked six innings and allowed three runs (two earned) on two hits in a Cleveland victory. Cantillo has been particularly effective lately, posting a 2.16 ERA across his last three starts. During that stretch he has allowed just four earned runs in 16⅔ innings.
Cleveland has won three of five games against Toronto this year and can clinch the season series with a win tonight.
