Cornerback Christian Gonzalez is taking a different approach from Patriots owner Robert Kraft when it comes to his contract negotiations.
Kraft said over the weekend that the Patriots have offered a contract that would make Gonzalez the highest-paid cornerback in the league and the highest-paid Patriots player in history, but Gonzalez said he wasn’t interested in having a public discussion about what is currently on the table in New England.
“A ton of respect for Mr. Kraft and what he’s done with this franchise,” Gonzalez said, via 98.5 The Sports Hub. “It’s just something we don’t want to handle in the media. I keep that with the team and my team and go on about that.”
Gonzalez repeated versions of that answer when asked other questions about his contract and how Kraft and the Patriots are handling the negotiations. He also explained why he has opted against a hold-in until the contract matter is resolved.
“These are my guys,” Gonzalez said. “It’s hard to sit and just watch. I like to be out on the field. This is what I love to do. At the end of the day, I’ve got to get better for myself and for the team. I’m focused on being here at training camp right now, taking it day-by-day, and see where it goes.”
If one assumes Kraft’s depiction of the offer is accurate and that Gonzalez wants to remain with the Patriots, it seems likely that an agreement will come together at some point in the near future even if we don’t hear much more about where things stand until the deal is done.
