College running back MicahJo Barnett dies after medical emergency on sideline

MicahJo Barnett, a junior running back at William Jewell College in Missouri, died Saturday after experiencing a medical emergency on the sideline during a game, via the Associated Press.

The incident happened roughly 20 minutes after kickoff of the game between William Jewel and Fort Lewis College. Barnett had scored a touchdown not long before the incident occurred.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with MicahJo’s family, our students, the Cardinal Football family, and the rest of our community during this time of loss,” the school said in a message on its website.

Barnett had scored with 5:15 remaining in the first quarter. The game was stopped with 4:32 left in the quarter. He had carried the ball six times, gaining 30 yards.

A vigil for Barnett and his family was scheduled for Saturday night.
