Tonight the Cubs will hand the ball to veteran left-hander Matthew Boyd (6-1, 3.81 ERA). His most recent start came July 24 against the Pirates, when he was outstanding despite not earning the decision in a 3-2 Cubs victory. Boyd tossed seven innings, allowing one run on seven hits, while striking out four and walking three. Boyd has allowed just six earned runs over 25⅓ innings in July and has won each of his last three decisions. St. Louis counters with right-hander Dustin May (5-7, 4.59 ERA). May’s most recent outing came July 24 against Cincinnati. Although the Cardinals lost 4-2, May delivered one of his better performances of the month, allowing just one run over six innings while striking out eight. Prior to that outing, May struggled against Arizona, surrendering five runs over five innings.
