Last night was a good old-fashioned pitcher’s duel as both starting pitchers dominated. Cubs’ left-hander Matthew Boyd was outstanding, tossing seven scoreless innings, allowing just four hits while striking out five. Cardinals’ right-hander Dustin May matched him nearly pitch for pitch, yielding only one hit across five scoreless innings. Neither team scored through the first nine innings as both bullpens continued the shutout. In the 10th inning, Pete Crow-Armstrong delivered what appeared to be the decisive blow with a two-run homer to right-center field, his 24th home run of the season, to give Chicago a 2-0 lead. The Cardinals, however, responded immediately in the bottom half. After loading the bases, Jordan Walker brought home the first St. Louis run on a fielder’s choice. One batter later, Iván Herrera became the hero, lining a two-run double into the left-center gap that scored both Walker and JJ Wetherholt, completing a stunning walk-off comeback and giving the Cardinals a 3-2 victory. Herrera finished the night 3-for-5 with two RBIs. The win snapped a three-game losing streak for St. Louis.
Chicago turns to right-hander Javier Assad (6-1, 3.86 ERA) to close out this four-game series. Over his last three appearances, he has allowed only two earned runs across nine innings with nine strikeouts and just one walk. His two most recent outings were scoreless appearances of three innings and one inning, respectively. The Cardinals counter with one of their most reliable starters, Andre Pallante (11-6, 3.77 ERA). After a rough outing on July 9, Pallante has rebounded allowing only three earned runs over his last 12⅓ innings, including a seven-inning scoreless outing with eight strikeouts in his most recent start.
Chicago takes the field today in second in the NL Central and atop the Wild Card standings while the Cardinals are fourth in the division and 2.5 games back of the final Wild Card spot.
