Cowboys coach Brian Schottenheimer embraced Super Bowl expectations recently, saying, “I make no qualms that that’s the goal. The Super Bowl next year is Feb. 14th, 2027. We plan on being there.”
Dak Prescott said Friday that’s the goal every year.
“That’s the one thing I love about the Cowboys Nation and being a player of the Cowboys is, it’s Super Bowl or bust,” Prescott said Friday while speaking to fans during a virtual meet and greet, via Tommy Yarrish of the team website. “And truthfully, that’s the only reason you play this game. And so if that’s not your mindset, if that’s not your mindset as a fan, then to me, you don’t have the right passion. You’re not a true winner. So absolutely, we’re working every day for it.
“Whether it be competing away from the game or even in the game when we’re competing, that’s why we have players like Caleb [Downs], changed our defensive coordinator, that scheme, and super excited about what we’re going to offer you guys.”
If it sounds as if Prescott was putting blame on the defense, well, it was deserved.
Matt Eberflus was fired as defensive coordinator after only one season. The Dallas defense ranked 32nd in scoring, allowing a franchise-record 511 points, and 30th in yards last season, costing the team a playoff berth.
The Cowboys hired Christian Parker to replace Eberflus and acquired edge rushers Rashan Gary and Malachi Lawrence, linebacker Dee Winters and defensive backs Downs, Cobie Durant and Jalen Thompson, among others, in the offseason.
The moves have made the Cowboys a popular dark horse Super Bowl team, but will the defensive changes be enough to get them where they haven’t been since 1995?
