On Monday, it wasn’t clear whether police were investigating an assault allegation against Jet quarterback Geno Smith.
It’s now clear that an investigation is ongoing.
Via Rich Cimini of ESPN, the following statement was released on Tuesday morning by police in Davie, Florida: “We were informed yesterday evening that, during review, it was determined that this case is being further investigated by detectives. It is active and we cannot release any additional information at this time.”
As of Monday afternoon, there were conflicting reports as to whether the case had been closed. Then, the authorities said it was closed. Then, they said it was open again.
It’s now clearly open and active. And that’s separate from the possibility (probability) that the NFL will investigate the situation for potential discipline under the Personal Conduct Policy. That can happen even if the criminal investigation is closed again, for good.
