On Sunday, MetLife Stadium will host the event with the most expensive tickets prices ever.
And it’s not an NFL game.
The World Cup finale between Spain and Argentina has, via Arash Markazi of The Sporting Tribune, a get-in price of $10,000.
The average ticket price is also a record. At $18,822, that’s twice the prior record, set by Super Bowl LVIII between the Chiefs and 49ers in Las Vegas.
Like anything else, the tickets are worth whatever someone will pay for them. At this point, someone has to be willing to pay at least $10,000 for roughly two hours of entertainment.
If you’d like to see a World Cup match before the tournament ends, there’s a far cheaper option later today in Miami. The third-place game between England and France had, as of Friday, a handful of tickets at only $455.
While Saturday’s game doesn’t mean much, the race for the Golden Boot continues. France’s Kylian Mbappé has eight goals. Argentina’s Lionel Messi, who’ll play on Sunday, has eight goals. (Messi would win a tie, since he has more assists.)
England’s Harry Kane has an outside chance. With six goals so far, a hat trick on Saturday could position him for his second Golden Boot.
Mbappé won it in 2022. Kane won it in 2018. Messi never has.
His more important objective is to win a second straight World Cup, which hasn’t happened since Brazil went back to back in 1958 and 1962.
