Vikings legend Harrison Smith is back for a fifteenth season in Minnesota. The initial reports regarding the contract ($12.25 million base, up to $16.25 million max) were surprising to some.
An executive from another team was skeptical of the reported value, based on Smith’s performance in 2025 and the fact that he had been available to anyone, with no takers, throughout the offseason, training camp, and preseason.
The contract indeed carries a $12.25 million base package, technically. Here’s the breakdown:
1. Signing bonus: $6.95 million.
2. 2026 base salary: $1.3 million.
3. 2026 per-game active roster bonus: $235,294 per game ($4 million total).
The $4 million in incentives are based on $1 million for earning a playoff berth (wild-card or bye), $1.5 million for winning in the divisional round, $2 million for winning the NFC Championship, or $4 million for winning the Super Bowl.
Basically, if the Vikings end up paying Smith $16.25 million, it will be the best money the franchise has ever spent.
The very high per-game roster bonuses reduce Smith’s guarantee to $8.25 million. If he plays all year, he gets to $12.25 million.
Smith arguably has greater value to the Vikings than he would have to a new team. As one source put it, Smith is a “glue guy,” whose mere presence makes the Minnesota defense and the rest of the team better.
As to his late availability, we’re told that when other teams inquired about him, Smith made it clear that he wasn’t going to attend training camp. Which made a return to Minnesota even more likely, if he decided to play for another season.
It may have been inevitable. Either way, Smith returns for one more run with the team that made him a first-round pick in 2012.
The defense is more than good enough to compete, and to contend. If the offense carries its weight, they could make the playoffs and win their first postseason game since 2019.
