Last Monday night the Giants lost starting quarterback Jaxson Dart for the season, and on Sunday they lost pass rusher Brian Burns for the season. Coach John Harbaugh said his team needs to rally to losing as important a pair of players as they could.
“We’re not the only team that faces losses and will face losses,” Harbaugh said. “We got our quarterback one week and probably our top defensive player the next week, it’s shocking. But you’ve got to overcome the shock, and you’ve got to overcome and find a way to play the next game and win the game. I feel bad for Brian, more than anything. My heart breaks for him.”
Harbaugh said that when Burns left the game, he initially didn’t think it was a serious injury, but it proved to be a season-ending torn ACL for the Giants’ defensive captain.
“Not just a great player, in many ways the leader of the defense,” Harbaugh said. “You hate to see it, and for him, too, he was just such a rock for us. Freaky play, turning the corner, puts his foot in the ground, gets hit in the side at the same time. Doesn’t look like much at the time, like these knee injuries don’t, these crazy contact injuries. Just a tough deal, but one we’ve got to deal with. You feel it, it hurts emotionally. You feel it more for the player than for the team.”
Burns has started every game since the Giants traded for him in 2024, and last year he was second in the NFL with 16.5 sacks.
