John Harbaugh: “Reasonable to assume” Malik Nabers plays in Week 1

Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers took another step in his recovery from last year’s torn ACL at the team’s practice on Monday.

Nabers took the field without a red non-contact jersey for the first time this summer. After the session, head coach John Harbaugh said that it was a good practice for Nabers and that the wideout was “probably moving the best we’ve seen him look” since he returned to the field.

That did not result in Harbaugh ruling Nabers in for the season opener against the Cowboys, but the head coach said it was safe to make inferences about the wideout’s availability.

“I don’t want to make any kind of statements like that,” Harbaugh said, via SNY. “It’s reasonable to assume that. Those are all kinds of things you can assume just based on watching the guy practice. The only thing I know more than you guys know is what the docs and the trainers tell me as far as his rehab. And that’s doing well, he’s doing really well with that. He’s strong, he’s in a good place but how he gets through practice, how ready he is to play and protect himself is really based on practice.”

Getting Nabers back in the lineup would be a big plus for Harbaugh as he starts his time on the Giants’ sideline and it may not be long before the answers about Nabers move from assumptions to guarantees.
