Kyle Shanahan feels better, will coach preseason opener

Nearly a month after he was in a serious car accident, 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan says he is mostly recovered and will coach the team’s preseason opener against the Titans on Thursday.

“I’m doing real good. My body feels good. I’ve just got to get this annoying cast off,” Shanahan said, gesturing at his left hand. “My ribs feel good, except when I sneeze. And my head feels so much better. Concussions do linger a little bit, the only things I deal with now are headaches and fatigue. That’s why I’m not always on the exact same routine but pretty close.”

Although Shanahan has delegated some head-coaching duties to assistant head coach Chris Foerster, he said he is watching many hours of tape and feels like he’s doing most of the things he would ordinarily be doing at this time of year.

“As far as the important stuff, I feel it’s about 100 percent,” Shanahan said. “I haven’t missed anything of film. I watch every single play with the coaches, with the players.”

Shanahan said that at first the concussion he suffered in the accident was making him sensitive to noise, to the point that the music playing during practice would bother him. But he now says he’s fully prepared for all the noise of an NFL game, and fully ready to get back to work.
