Luke Altmyer: A joy to spend time with Teddy Bridgewater, his retirement creates opportunity

Rookie quarterback Luke Altmyer is set to see a lot of action in the Lions’ first preseason game.

Teddy Bridgewater’s retirement left Altmyer as the only quarterback behind Jared Goff on Detroit’s roster. Josh Dobbs is set to sign with the team, but he’s just joining the team and Goff is not going to play against the Bengals on Thursday. That leaves the undrafted rookie with a chance to make a big impression.

“First of all, best wishes to [Bridgewater],” Altmyer said, via the team’s website. “I’m so thankful to spend time with him and [Goff], obviously, learning from both of them, different perspectives (and) different outlooks on how they see things. It was a joy to spend some time with him. But it brings about opportunity for myself. The standard is to play good football no matter how many reps or whatever my role is. I have a job to do, and my job is to do that very well at a high level. I’m thankful and believe in my abilities and I’m going to go cut it loose whatever that looks like.”

Dobbs’s experience makes him likelier to be the No. 2 when the regular season starts, but Altmyer could make the decision about keeping a third quarterback more difficult if he can lead the offense successfully in Cincinnati.
