Patriots cornerback Christian Gonzalez joined the rest of the team’s starters in not playing against the Colts on Thursday night and he didn’t take part in a joint practice on Tuesday either.
It was the first time that Gonzalez missed practice this summer and the day off came a day after Gonzalez took a hard fall during a drill at practice. It also came amid his ongoing push for a contract extension and that left some wondering if Gonzalez was passing on higher intensity work against another team due to the negotiations.
Head coach Mike Vrabel fielded a question about the reason for Gonzalez’s absence after Thursday’s game.
“Christian was unavailable, physically unavailable for the practice,” Vrabel said, via a transcript from the team. “That’s the clarification. Just like other players that I told to have treatment, and everybody has a plan here, there were other guys that were in that same category. If you want to list the names, Christian Elliss, Brenden Schooler, Harold Landry, Christian Barmore, et cetera. So make sure they’re all included. They were all in the same group of what they did.”
Gonzalez’s practice status will be updated in the coming days and an extended absence will lead to more questions about just what’s making him physically unavaliable to get on the field for the Patriots.
