With the Trade Deadline looming, the Baltimore Orioles (52-55) continue their three-game series at Comerica Park tonight against the Detroit Tigers (50-57). Each team continues to straddle the line between buyers and sellers at said deadline.
Baltimore got the bats working with 12 hits including three home runs in an 8-5 win. Last night was the first game in the O’s last nine in which they collected more than a single home run.
Baltimore wasted little time getting on the board. Pete Alonso scored in the first inning on a Taylor Ward fielder’s choice, and the Orioles extended the lead to 3-0 in the second. Jackson Holliday doubled to begin the inning and later scored on a Jeremiah Jackson groundout before Dylan Beavers delivered a two-out RBI single. Detroit responded in the bottom of the second when Hao-Yu Lee drove home Zach McKinstry with a sacrifice fly. Baltimore answered again in the third as Coby Mayo singled home Leody Taveras, giving the Orioles a 4-1 lead. The Tigers fought back in the fourth. Detroit loaded the bases with nobody out and cut the deficit to one run on an RBI infield single by Lee and a sacrifice fly from Matt Vierling. The decisive stretch came in the fifth inning. Taveras launched a solo homer to right field to make it 5-3, and after Jackson Holliday singled, Mayo crushed a two-run homer to left-center, pushing Baltimore’s lead to 7-3. After a couple runs for the Tigers, Tyler O’Neill’s pinch-hit solo homer in the sixth restored Baltimore’s three-run cushion and provided the final score of 8-5. Grant Wolfram earned the victory in relief, and Rico Garcia recorded his fifth save.
Baltimore is scheduled to hand the ball to veteran right-hander Dean Kremer (1-3, 5.06 ERA) tonight. The righthander was pummeled last Wednesday against the Red Sox allowing eight hits and six runs over six innings. Troy Melton (5-1, 1.95 ERA) takes the mound for Detroit. The 25-year-old is having a breakout season. In July, Melton has started four games and allowed three earned runs over 22.1 innings.
