Patriots place G Mike Onwenu on injured reserve

The Patriots moved right guard Mike Onwenu to their injured reserve list on Tuesday.

Onwenu left Sunday’s win over the Steelers after hurting his ankle and a report later in the day said that it was broken. Head coach Mike Vrabel did not confirm that at a Monday press conference, but said Onwenu will not “be available here in the short term.”

Greg Van Roten replaced Onwenu against the Steelers, but Vrabel did not rule out moving first-round pick Caleb Lomu from tackle or making other moves to replace Onwenu in the lineup.

The Patriots filled the open roster spot by signing punter Mitch Wishnowsky off of their practice squad. He was elevated for each of New England’s first two games.

Tight end Tanner Conner was signed to the practice squad to round out the day’s moves.
