The Red Sox (41-48) and White Sox (47-43) continue their three-game series tonight at Rate Field with Boston looking to extend their winning streak to five following last night’s 8-1 win. Last night’s opener belonged entirely to Boston. Rookie left-hander Payton Tolle was dominant. The bats supported Tolle led by solo homers from Andruw Monasterio and Ceddanne Rafaela in the second inning before steadily adding on throughout the night. Tolle allowed just two hits over six scoreless innings while striking out six, and Boston’s bullpen handled the rest. The White Sox managed only four hits, with Sam Antonacci accounting for three of them. The Red Sox broke the game open for good with a four-run ninth inning highlighted by RBI doubles from Willson Contreras and Romy Gonzalez.
Tonight’s pitching matchup features an intriguing battle between Boston rookie left-hander Jake Bennett (3-3, 3.10 ERA) and White Sox right-hander Davis Martin (9-3, 3.08 ERA). Bennett has been one of the bright spots for Boston since his promotion from the minors. His most recent outing came July 3 against the Angels, when he delivered 7 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on five hits without a walk while striking out six in a 5-2 Red Sox victory. Over his last three starts, Bennett has allowed just three earned runs across 20 innings, including a six-inning shutout performance at Colorado and a strong win over the Yankees in which he surrendered only one run over 6 1/3 innings. His combination of command and ability to limit hard contact has helped him post a stellar 0.98 WHIP through his first seven major-league starts. Martin has been one of Chicago’s most reliable starters all season, entering tonight with a 9-3 record and a 3.08 ERA. However, his most recent start was abbreviated. On July 2 in Cleveland, Martin lasted only 3 1/3 innings, allowing two runs on six hits while issuing five walks in a 6-5 loss to the Guardians. Before that outing, though, Martin had turned in a string of quality performances, including 5 1/3 scoreless innings against Kansas City on June 27 and six innings of one-run ball against Detroit on June 21. He has been especially effective at home this season, where his ERA sits at a stingy 0.88.
Lets dive into tonight’s matchup and find a sweat or two.
