Report: Giants WR Calvin Austin tore his ACL

Signs point to wide receiver Malik Nabers being back in the Giants lineup for Week 1 after tearing his ACL last season, but one of their other wideouts won’t be joining him on the field.

Calvin Austin was carted off the field after suffering a non-contact injury during practice on Tuesday and Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Austin has torn his ACL. The injury will end Austin’s season and force the Giants to change their plans at wideout.

Austin signed a one-year deal with the Giants as a free agent this offseason and was expected to slot into the role filled by WanDale Robinson alongside Nabers and Darius Slayton. They also signed Darnell Mooney to a one-year deal in March, but an addition to the receiving corps later in the year will likely be the subject of more conversation in light of Austin’s injury.

Odell Beckham Jr.’s return to the Giants has generated a great deal of interest, but his chances of making the team as a reserve have been unclear due to the fact that he doesn’t play special teams. With Austin out of the picture, Beckham could be likelier to land a role on the 53-man roster when final cuts are made this weekend.
