Wide receiver Keenan Allen wasn’t on the field for the Colts’ joint practice with the Falcons on Wednesday, but thoughts of what he’ll look like in the offense were on head coach Shane Steichen’s mind.
Steichen called Allen “the most cerebral receiver” that he’s worked with in the NFL — they were both with the Chargers from 2014-2020 — because he sees the game like a quarterback. Steichen thinks that is going to make Allen a perfect fit with the team’s actual quarterback Daniel Jones.
“It’s going to be real fun,” Steichen said, via the team’s website. “Those conversations that those guys are going to have, just the ins and outs on how to run routes, what they’re looking at through a game plan week, going into game sideline adjustments. I think that’s going to be a really smooth transition with those two.”
Jones was sharp during Wednesday’s practice without Allen in the mix as reporters noted that he did not throw an incompletion during team drills, but he acknowledged the benefits of having “another guy who knows how to get open and create space” in an offense that’s been without Alec Pierce all summer. Tight end Tyler Warren also suffered an injury on Wednesday, which only serves to underscore the value that Allen can bring to Indianapolis.
