The Tigers and Astros continue their series tonight in Houston after Detroit (30-42) grabbed the opener with a 9-3 smack of the Astros (33-41). Detroit is now 8-4 in June as they try to climb back into the race in the American League Central. Houston has lost two in a row and is now 6-7 in June.
Detroit’s offense erupted in yesterday’s win, powered almost entirely by Colt Keith. The third baseman went 3-for-4 with three home runs and six RBI. The Tigers jumped on Houston early, building a 5–0 lead by the third inning behind home runs from Kevin McGonigle, Keith, and Spencer Torkelson. Houston briefly responded with back-to-back homers from Isaac Paredes and Jose Altuve to cut it to 5–3, but the Astros’ offense stalled from there and didn’t score again.
Detroit tacked on insurance late — including Keith’s second and third homers — finishing with 11 hits and five home runs. On the mound, Detroit pieced together a bullpen effort after scratching its starter, while Houston’s Kai‑Wei Teng struggled, allowing five earned runs in 3.1 innings.
Former Astros’ hurler Framber Valdez (3–5, 4.40 ERA) takes the ball for the Tigers tonight. After the bullpen game last night, manager A.J. Hinch will expect innings from his workhorse. Houston counters with Hunter Brown. The Astros’ ace is making his first start since coming off the disabled list. Brown is a Cy Young candidate when healthy. That is exactly what the Astros’ need if they have any postseason hopes.
The key variable tonight is whether Detroit’s lineup carries over Monday’s power surge and how effective Hunter Brown can be in his first start after an extended stay on the injured list.
Lets dive into tonight’s matchup and find a sweat or two.
