The second half of a day night doubleheader in Cleveland tonight is no different than the first. The Detroit Tigers (64-75) must knock off the Guardians (70-70) if their postseason dreams are to exist beyond this weekend four-game series. Detroit is 5.5 games behind Cleveland in the chase for the final Wild Card spot. With 22 games remaining, every game is crucial for the Tigers. Each game matters as well for the Guardians though. Their hold on the final Wild Card spot in tenuous at just a half game over Texas and Toronto.
For a brief moment after they traded their ace, Taryk Skubal, Detroit made noise in the AL Central and Wild Card chase, but the Tigers have lost 11 of their last 14 games to fall to the brink of elimination. Cleveland is but 6-4 in their last ten but in a league where mediocrity puts you in contention, the Guardians control their postseason destiny heading into the season’s final few weeks.
Tonight’s pitching matchup pits rookie Andrew Sears (0-1, 6.75 ERA) on the mound for Detroit against veteran Foster Griffin (15-4, 3.21 ERA). The young southpaw will be making his third appearance of the season for Detroit. Sears threw 2.2 shutout innings against the Dodgers last Saturday against the Dodgers after getting shelled in Kansas City the previous weekend (4 IP, 5 ER). Griffin is at the heart of Cleveland’s move north in the standings having pitched at least five innings in each of his last four starts while allowing no more than two earned runs in any of the four. The southpaw faced the Tigers to begin that mini run back on August 12. He allowed four hits and one earned run over five innings in a 6-4 Cleveland win.
Lets dive into tonight’s matchup and find a sweat or two.
