It’s a battle of division leaders as the leaders in the AL Central, the Chicago White Sox (72-64) take on the AL West-leading Houston Astros (69-68) beginning tonight in the first of a crucial four-game series tonight at Daikin Park. The Astros lead in the West is two games over the Texas Rangers while the Sox are 3.5 games ahead of the Cleveland Guardians.
The White Sox arrive in Houston after taking two of three over the weekend against the Twins in Minnesota. Chicago took the opener 7-4 on Friday, followed with a tight 3-2 victory on Saturday to clinch the series before falling 5-1 in yesterday’s finale. The road series win was somewhat rare for Chicago who have won just 31 wins in 68 games away from the Windy City. A better team on the road than at home is Houston. The Astros return home tonight after series wins on the road against the Yankees and the Mets taking two of three from each. The successful trip improved Houston’s road record to 36-33. Their home record, however, is a dismal 33-35. Only the Athletics, Angels, and Guardians have fewer wins at home in the American League.
Chicago will send veteran left-hander Anthony Kay (9-6, 4.09 ERA) to the mound for his 26th start of the season tonight. He has worked 28⅓ innings in August while allowing just 11 earned runs. The bulk of those runs, however, came in his most recent start. Last Tuesday against Texas, Kay lasted but 4.2 innings and allowed four earned runs. Houston counters with right-hander Peter Lambert (8-7, 3.66 ERA). Like Kay, Lambert has been reliable throughout the August with the exception of one start. The righthander has allowed two earned runs in four of his five starts this month. Two starts ago against the Angels, however, Lambert was lit up for nine runs in just 3.2 innings.
