Phillies vs. Diamondbacks prediction: Odds, recent stats, trends, and best bets for September 1

The Phillies and Diamondbacks continue a critical National League series – especially for Arizona – tonight at Chase Field after Philadelphia opened the series with a 2-1 win last night. Bryson Stott went yard in the second and Bryce Harper doubled home Garrett Stubbs in the third to account for all the runs Philly would need thanks to a sterling effort on the bump from Aaron Nola and five relievers. The veteran Nola went five innings and allowed five hits and one run to secure his sixth win of the season. The win was the Phillies’ fifth in a row while the Diamondbacks have now lost two straight.

Following last night’s game Philadelphia is comfortably in the playoff picture sitting five games up in the race for one of the Wild Card spots, but they continue to chase the division title trailing the Braves now by just four games following last night’s win. Arizona sits in third in the NL West, ten games behind the first place Dodgers and so their path to the playoffs will have to be via a Wild Card berth. Their loss last night dropped them one half game behind the Padres for the final Wild Card berth.

Philadelphia will hand the ball to left-hander Jesús Luzardo (12-5, 3.09 ERA) tonight. Acquired in the offseason from Miami, the southpaw has been consistent all season and elite of late. In his last five starts, Luzardo has allowed five earned runs over 34.1 innings. Arizona counters with their ace, veteran left-hander Eduardo Rodriguez (14-4, 2.50), who has been lights out himself the last three weeks. The southpaw has not allowed a run over his last two starts covering 12.2 innings and has allowed four total in the two starts prior to those.

Lets dive into tonight’s matchup and find a sweat or two.
