Quarterback Geno Smith is back with the Jets. In the first offseason of his second tenure with the team, Smith was involved in an incident that sparked an on-again, off-again police investigation. (The probe is currently off.)
On Tuesday, in his first press conference since the situation unfolded, Smith expressed regret for creating an off-field issue for his team.
“I really hate the fact that something I was a part of could’ve been a distraction for this team, my teammates and this organization because a lot of hard work has been put in,” Smith said, via Rich Cimini of ESPN.
“A lot of guys have put in a lot of work for us to be in a good spot as a team. I’m happy that I’m able to put this behind me. I’m looking forward to moving forward.”
Smith, per Cimini, also said he discussed the situation with coach Aaron Glenn, General Manager Darren Mougey, and veteran leaders on the team. Smith did not elaborate on what was said.
And while the investigation currently has been closed, it could still open again — if, for example, the alleged victim decides to provide police with a sworn statement.
The full police report suggested that there were multiple skirmishes between Smith and his accuser. Smith also claimed that she had tried to steal $20 million in watches and jewelry during the dispute.
