The 49ers have announced that coach Kyle Shanahan was recently involved in a car accident.
Per the release, the accident happened last week. Shanahan suffered “non-life-threatening injuries.”
He’ll participate in team activities “on a limited basis” at the start of training camp while he recovers. Assistant head coach Chris Foerster will handle the head-coaching responsibilities during this period of time.
ESPN reports that “Shanahan broke his nose, three ribs, his hand, needed over 40 stitches in his face and suffered a severe concussion” during the July 14 accident that occurred near his home in California.
His car collided with an SUV. The other driver was not injured. No one has been cited for the accident, and the authorities have said alcohol or drugs were not involved.
Shanahan was treated and released at a local hospital. He has been recovering at home. Doctors have declined to clear him to participate in all training-camp practices until the concussion symptoms subside.
He’s starting his tenth season as head coach of the 49ers. Their first practice is scheduled for Sunday. The 49ers open the season on September 10 in Australia, against the Rams.
