The World Cup ends today, with the final match between Spain and Argentina.
And the folks at FIFA got very lucky with the weather. The wildfire smoke is gone, and there will be no rain on Spain.
Is MetLife Stadium truly the best place for the last game? SoFi Stadium is superior. Even AT&T Stadium and Mercedes-Benz Stadium would have made more sense, since they’re covered.
Picking New Jersey in mid-July was always a roll of the dice, similar to the NFL’s decision to play Super Bowl XLVIII there in early 2014. It could have been very hot today. (It’ll be in the low 80s.) It could have been ridiculously humid. (It’s only 44 percent.) There’s zero chance of thunderstorms or rain of any kind.
The game begins at 3:00 p.m. ET on Fox. (The Spanish-language version is on Telemundo and Peacock.) I’m heading to the barn to watch it on the big screen with a big cigar and a small workload.
The best part about truly discovering soccer this summer has been enjoying a sport for the sake of the sport, without having to chase stories or formulate takes or whatever. Not that I don’t love that aspect of this existence; it’s just nice to be a sports fan and only a sports fan — especially of a sport that it took me more than 50 years of watching sports to truly appreciate and understand (mostly).
If you’re near a TV today, or if you’re simply watching on your phone, check it out. It will be a spectacle. And hopefully it will be a great game between the top two teams in the world.
