Myles Garrett on Aaron Donald: A difficult decision, don’t want to push him

Myles Garrett’s arrival in Los Angeles sparked talk of Aaron Donald coming back to play for the Rams in 2026, but Garrett isn’t going to try to sell Donald on returning to the NFL after two years of retirement.

Rams head coach Sean McVay said earlier this week that he has no news of an “imminent decision” from Donald about whether he’ll join Garrett on the Rams’ defensive line. Garrett spoke to reporters from Rams training camp on Wednesday about the difficulty of “getting back to that tempo” after so much time away from the game, but said he believes Donald would be able to do it “for however many games he chooses to play.”

Garrett did not make it sound like he plans to tell Donald that or anything else because he believes the ultimate decision has to come from Donald himself.

“I’d love to learn from him,” Garrett said. “I’ve watched his tape. Everyone who’s been a rusher from anywhere across the line, they have a lot of respect for him. I don’t want to push him in one way or another. If he’s here, I’m going to be excited to be his teammate, his partner in crime. And I think we can do great things, but it’s a difficult thing coming back, and I know he has a family. He has a lot of decisions to make. Last thing he needs is me to push him in one direction or another. I’m gonna support him either way and I look forward to seeing whatever happens.”

Donald has been on a workout regimen to help him determine if he’s physically up to the task or returning to the NFL trenches and it’s not clear when any decision about his plans will come. That uncertainty seems fine with the Rams as getting Donald back would be a finishing touch to a roster that’s already in strong shape thanks in part to Garrett’s presence.
