The Kansas City Royals (59-74) and the Toronto Blue Jays (64-69) meet tonight at Rogers Centre in Game 2 of their three-game series. The Royals won their ninth straight game last night knocking off the Jays 5-3.
The Royals struck quickly in the first inning. Carter Jensen scored on a Salvador Perez ground-ball double play to give Kansas City a 1-0 lead. Toronto answered immediately in the bottom half when Jesús Sánchez lifted a sacrifice fly that scored Brett Bateman, tying the game at 1-1. The game remained deadlocked until the fifth inning. Bobby Witt Jr. reached base and eventually scored on Perez’s RBI single to left field, giving Kansas City a 2-1 advantage. In the sixth, Nick Loftin scored when Kyle Isbel’s sacrifice bunt resulted in a throwing error by Vladimir Guerrero Jr., and later in the inning Carter Jensen added a sacrifice fly that pushed the lead to 4-1. The Royals added an important insurance run in the ninth when John Rave singled home Tyler Tolbert. Toronto made things interesting in the bottom of the inning. Nathan Lukes delivered a two-run single that scored Derek Cameron and Brett Bateman, trimming the deficit to 5-3. However, the comeback fell short as Kansas City closed out the victory. Seth Lugo delivered five efficient innings on the bump for the Royals. The right-hander allowed one run on six hits while striking out five and walking only one batter enroute to his sixth win of the season. Toronto received three hits from Bateman and two hits each from Lukes and Andrés Giménez, but the Blue Jays went just 1-for-10 with runners in scoring position and could not capitalize on several opportunities throughout the game.
While the win was Kansas City’s ninth in a row, the Royals remain in last in the AL Central, 10.5 games behind the division-leading White Sox. They are eight games out of the final Wild Card spot. The Blue Jays are last in the AL East, 14.5 games behind first-place Tampa Bay and now three games out of the final Wild Card spot.
Kansas City is expected to start Randy Dobnak (2-1, 1.58 ERA). The 31-year-old righthander has not given up a run in his last two starts (9.2 innings). This is a bullpen game for the Blue Jays who will start Spencer Miles (5-2, 3.02 ERA). The reliever has not allowed a run over his last seven appearances but has not pitched more than one inning in any of those seven.
